SLC4 is dedicated to enhancing collaboration between CERT Programs within Salt Lake County, building supportive relationships, and aligning with the national CERT mission and vision. We strive to strengthen local leadership skills through comprehensive training, expose program leaders to the latest innovations, and coordinate resources and trainings for a more effective emergency response.
Membership in SLC4 comprises all registered CERT programs in Salt Lake County and their sponsoring entities. Each program appoints two representatives to ensure diverse perspectives and expertise. SLC4 is inclusive, welcoming stakeholders to attend meetings, provide valuable insights, and actively contribute to our community's preparedness efforts.
Regular and special meetings are vital components of our operational framework, allowing representatives from CERT Programs to engage, discuss, and make decisions collectively. Meetings are held the second Wednesday of each month.
SLC4 actively promotes excellence in emergency response by aligning CERT standards and credentialing, planning multi-jurisdictional exercises. We believe in continuous improvement and innovation to better serve our community.
As we navigate the ever-evolving landscape of emergency preparedness and response, the Salt Lake County CERT Coordination Council remains dedicated to supporting each other in times of disaster, working together on projects that benefit the entire valley, and ultimately contributing to a safer and more resilient Salt Lake County.
Join us in building a community that stands strong in the face of challenges.
The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program provides valuable education to volunteers regarding disaster preparedness tailored to their local environment.
Volunteers undergo training in fundamental disaster response skills, including:
This standardized program ensures a uniform approach to volunteer training and coordination nationwide, enabling professional responders to entrust them with essential tasks during disasters, thereby enabling the responders to concentrate on more intricate responsibilities.
In Salt Lake County, every municipality oversees and operates its own CERT programs, conducting regular training sessions throughout the year. These training programs are overseen by the Emergency Manager or CERT Program Manager designated for each municipality.
In 1985, the Los Angeles City Fire Department introduced the CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) concept, aiming to enhance disaster preparedness among civilians. The significance of this initiative was highlighted by the Whittier Narrows earthquake in 1987, emphasizing the widespread threat of major disasters in California and the urgency of empowering individuals to address their immediate needs during such crises.
By 1993, CERT had evolved into a national program, with participation from all 50 states, numerous tribal nations, and U.S. territories. Each program is tailored to its respective community, playing a vital role in fostering a Culture of Preparedness across the United States. With over 2,700 local CERT programs nationwide, more than 600,000 individuals have received training since the program's inception on a national scale.
